Life Before Stroke
Hi, my name is Debbie and I've been married to my husband Frank for 32 years!
We were "childhood sweethearts", we started going out together in 1980. Life was so simple and exciting back then, we were engaged in 1982, bought out first house in 1984 and were married in 1985. A real love story, we worked hard to set ourselves up and welcomed our first of 3 sons Joel in 1989. I gave up work to raise Joel, and our second son Wade arrived 16 months later in 1990. Frank found a second job, so I could stay home to raise our boys, we were a real team! Cody our third son came along in 1995, our family was complete. As the boys grew, I picked up some casual work here and there to help out, and we joined the boys up for soccer. Life was busy, between work, school, family holidays, house renovations and coaching and managing two soccer teams, but we all loved it. Fun times. When Cody started school, I went back to full time work, but as the boys grew we got itchy feet and decided to move out of Sydney and to the beautiful Central Coast in 2003. Being hard workers, we didn't want to move until we had guaranteed jobs, so we bought a cafe!!
For 3 years we worked 7 days a week and long hours, life was too busy, we didn't have time for anything else, so we sold it. We have some good and bad memories from that experience. After the cafe, we both got full time jobs. through all of this we always stayed close got along really well. Frank worked at his job for five years and he loved it, then new management took over and he was made redundant! It hit him hard, but a couple of months later he found another job. The first day at work he went ok, that day he came home, cut the lawn, had dinner, same as every night, watched some tv and went to bed.
Then disaster struck, on 14th October 2008, I woke up at midnight feeling tapping on the bed. Frank was on the floor hitting the side of the bed. He had a stroke. I called an ambulance, they took him to hospital then flew him to Sydney by helicopter. It was terrifying! The neurosurgeon called me from Sydney to ask permission to operate. He had an intracerebral hemorrhage, and if they didn't remove the hematoma in his brain, he wouldn't survive. I was so frightened, he is my soulmate.
