Trials & Tribulations

After he was stabilized and received the normal  hospital based physiotherapy, which consisted of only 1 hour  per day, which was not always one on one, he was allowed home and received  6 weeks home based physio, one hour per day, once a week. After that you're on your own!

Still coming to terms with our "new" lives and surviving on government pensions, I looked for anything and everything to get help to help him recover. I researched so much, trolled the internet and read university research papers. We tried acupuncture, where they put needles in his head and sometimes attached electrical currents to them, all that did was cost us a lot of money, but we had to try it. I tried doing exercises like walking etc with him at home, but we both got sick of that really quickly, we also got 6 free visits to a hand physio through the GP, that was ok, he did gain a little strength with him, but like with anything to do after a stroke it has to be regular and ongoing, 6 weeks is not enough. I applied for a grant and he received $5000. worth of physio through rehab on the move at Pymble , but some of that money had to be used for travel there and back, he liked it because they had a treadmill with a harness to keep him upright. Then I found university trials and they are free, so I got him into one  for non invasive brain stimulation, (using electrodes attached to his scalp, they dull the non damaged side of the brain and stimulate the damaged side ), only catch is , it was in Melbourne! So we organized it and flew there for 3 weeks. This was great, it was only for his arm, but he did gain a lot  more movement which lasted a few months after treatment, but as with everything else if it's not ongoing you lose the gains. Then I found another trial at Newcastle Uni, this one was using  an exercise bike to see if aerobic exercise could help recovery, half way through the trial he got his first ear infection and was hospitalized, so couldn't finish the trial. The ear infections were severe and he was given strong antibiotics which have caused him more problems. They affected his mental state severely to the point where we had to see physiologists and psychiatrists and I believe it has also affected his muscles and cognition! Since the last infection, he has been a lot slower and weaker. Now he has received an Ndis package, hopefully this will be ongoing and will finally help recovery.                          Never give up !!!
